35+ YEARS IN THE MAKING
Seeing an opportunity to make safety vests for a council and knowing a person who could sew, Greg Mitchell founded Styx Mill in mid 1991. From a small tin building, he developed not only a new product but a future for New Zealanders making world class specialist clothing.
Today you can find Styx Mill Road and the suburb Styx Millon the northern side of Christchurch, with the manufacturing facility moving to a new location near Christchurch Airport.
You won’t find a ‘designed locally & made over there’ label in a Styx Mill garment.
CRAFTSMANSHIP
Every Styx Mill garment made in our own sewing rooms with uncompromising craftsmanship. Sewing machinists are skilled professionals and we are proud to work alongside decades of experience at our New Zealand production base, including some staff who have been there over 25 years.
We are unwavering on local manufacturing and as part of this, any staff member can stop production to improve a process or product. We reward staff with travel and item number recognition where their development ideas lead to top selling superstar product lines.
Sending work to sweatshops is easy, but we believe in our people and what they can make.
FAMILY OWNED
Greg and Sarah Mitchell started the business with family values and Styx Mill today is a result of that. Since the first sewing room opened in 1991, we have had a long history of family involvement and there are Mitchells working across most areas of the business in both New Zealand and Australia.
Today this extends to second generation family ownership and an evolving of the business with profit share programs. Styx Mill celebrated opening a new factory in 2025 and this would not be possible without our shared family of staff, customers and suppliers.

SUSTAINABILITY
At Styx Mill, sustainability is in every garment. We create premium New Zealand-made product that lasts longer, reducing waste through durability and design. We also offer repair services and trade backs that keep thousands of garments out of landfill and in action for years to come.
Investment in modern technology like automatic cutting machines has reduced our waste by double digit percentages. Investing in local people with living wages and profit share brings a better, more sustainable future to our employee partners.

RETAIL NETWORK
Styx Mill is a big supporter of retail shops across multiple industries and countries, offering a great product, no question right of return and full business support. Retailers are a lifeblood, allowing customers to try on garments and purchase from trained expert staff.
As part of our approach to e-commerce, Styx Mill gives a margin on online sales to participating retailers. We recognise not every store can hold every product and size on the shelf, however we are in full support of the wonderful people and companies who sell our product every day.
